In 1992, Durham County Cricket Club joined the County Championship. The team was elevated to senior status and played first-class cricket. The painting shows a game at the Racecourse Ground beneath the stunning backdrop of Durham Cathedral. This was an area of open parkland that university students had used for years as a place to lounge on summer days and reflect on Plato, Archimedes, Joyce and William Hill. Durham moved to a new, purpose-built ground at The Riverside in 1995. Around this time, county cricketers were not paid all year round as professional sportsmen. Come the end of the English season, most would seek work outside of the game which lead to many being skilled or qualified in another area of employment. This made for interesting and varied changing room ‘banter’ during the summer months.
