Who on earth had the idea of painting this football club’s name on the side of a stand? It was massive. Enormous.
It would have made Tony’s metal angel look like a garden ornament. Possibly only the second man-made object visible from the moon when painted in the 1970’s, this was a statement and a fine example of the typographer’s art.
Smack, bang in the middle of the city.
Imagine trying to do it nowadays. Just slide it by the authorities for approval. “Not on your Nelly mate. You can’t put that there with people driving by, it might distract them. It could cause an accident”
“No, but you can put up a much smaller sign in a fine sans serif font that no one will notice and which won’t upset anyone.” Great
In a way, this superb Newcastle sign summed up the city and the club: it is a place of opinion and pride where folks will happily remove their upper garments in -15° temperatures to celebrate a goal and a win. A great, vibrant, buzzing city with an equally great, vibrant, buzzing football club.
