Mary Poppins was a wonderful film and one its most memorable scenes saw Dick Van Dyke prancing about the rooftops and chimneys with his mates, twiddling their brushes. Absolutely fantastic. Find me one person who has sat in a darkened cinema or bauble and tinsel bedecked front room whose pulse hasn’t quickened at the sight of Julie Andrews floating downwind clutching her brush.
In many English cities the chimneys, although nearly obsolete, still stud the horizon as far as the eye can see and Manchester is a very good example. At Old Trafford the march of the chimneys is only interrupted by the vertical enormity of the football stadium.
It is unusual in Turnstiles and Terraces to find a painting depicting a modern stadium: however, this is Old Trafford and Old Trafford has grown and grown above its original foundations.
The supporters have not been dragged away to a purpose built, soulless, new home on the site of reclaimed marshland or atop the dubious remnants of a disused power station. No, Old Trafford stands where it has always stood, in amongst the homes of local people who, from 2021, may face a hefty fine for the smoke from wet wood or coal emitting from their chimneys.
Chim-Chiminey to you.
